The India, Brazil and South Africa Facility for Poverty and Hunger Alleviation (IBSA Fund) launched its Annual Report 2019 in the context of the 2020 United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation celebrations.
This Report presents the accomplishments of the IBSA Fund in 2019 and summarizes achievements in earlier years.
Since its inception, the IBSA Fund has supported 31 development projects in 20 countries from the Global South in fighting against poverty and alleviating hunger through South-South cooperation.
During this year, marked by crises, it is remarkable to see how the projects supported through the IBSA Fund have become instrumental in helping the partner countries in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. For instance, an IBSA Fund supported eLearning project to improve health care coverage and quality in the Northern Coastal region of Vietnam that had proven to be successful in reaching health care workers in remote-site medical settings, is now being used to respond to COVID-19. A module on this disease’s prevention and care has been added, enabling remote health care workers to receive topical and current medical information in local language.
The IBSA Fund has established itself as a successful model of South-South cooperation: India, Brazil and South Africa, three great democracies of the South coming together with a mechanism that delivers impactful sustainable development results.
The Governments of the partner countries have had a key role taking leadership and ownership to the projects, and UN Agencies and partner organizations have skillfully supported the government of the partner countries in successfully managing the projects through South-South cooperation.
This Fund benefits from much public recognition, legitimacy and praise for its practical and impactful South-South approach. It has achieved remarkable results. The IBSA Fund is an initiative that UNOSSC will continue to support as a model of South-South partnership towards the fulfilment of the 2030 Agenda.
The IBSA Fund will continue to play instrumental roles in helping the partner developing countries to better respond and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The India, Brazil and South Africa Facility for Poverty and Hunger Alleviation (IBSA Fund) is a pioneering initiative to implement South-South cooperation for the benefit of other Southern countries in partnership with the United Nations system. Its purpose is to identify replicable and scalable projects that can be disseminated to interested developing countries as examples of best practices in the fight against poverty and hunger. The United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation is the Fund Manager for this initiative.
