Biogas Institute of Ministry of Agriculture (BIOMA) P?R?China, established in l979, affiliated to the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and located in Chengdu, Sichuan, has grown into a national-grade professional research institute engaged in scientific research?technical development and training?BIOMA is responsible for tremendous national basic and applied researches relevant to rural energy and environmental protection.

BIOMA has 114 staff members, including 13 professors, 26 associate professors, 30 with mid-level title, 39 with PhD. and 38 with master’s degree, 13 winners of special government allowance, 4 experts with outstanding contributions rewarded by the province and ministry, 10 outstanding talents rewarded by CAAS, 1 doctoral tutor, 17 master tutor and 22 current graduate students.

BIOMA has 5 scientific research departments, including Microbial Research Center, Biogas Engineering Research Center, Biomass Energy Technology Research Center, Quality Inspection and Test Center for Biogas Appliances and Facilities Ministry of Agriculture , Training and Information Research Center, and has established many technical services and achievements transformation platforms consisting of Key Laboratory of Development and Application of Rural Renewable Energy of MOA, Sichuan Biogas Engineering Research Center, Sichuan Anaerobic Microbial Resource Center, Sichuan biogas technology base for International Science and Technology Cooperation, New Material for Rural Energy Development Research Center of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Reference Center for Biogas Research and Training, Agricultural Special Trade Skill Testing Authority, Chengdu Energy and Environmental Engineering Design Institute of MOA, Science and Technology company of Biogas Institute of MOA, Chengdu Huanneng International Cooperative Corporation and science and technology support platforms as Gongxing Base in Shuangliu District, Chengdu. BIOMA edits a professional academic journal named China Biogas and sets up an influential website in biogas field.

With strong technical force, complete infrastructure and sophisticated experimental equipment, BIOMA has taken a good reputation in the research on biogas engineering technology, anaerobic microorganism and anaerobic operation technique, BIOMA devotes itself to the contribution in the rural renewable energy, management of rural environment, basic and applied basic research of agro-ecological restoration, and scientific research and technical promotion of basic theory and key common technologies for rural energy and environmental engineering. and training works. BIOMA has undertaken and fulfilled more than 400 Scientific research projects and obtained over 30 rewards of scientific and technical advance at state?ministry and provincial levels, 27 patents and involved 32 national standards and criteria. In addition, BIOMA dominates the design and construction of more than 600 large and medium sized biogas plants, ranging from industrial organic wastewater, urban domestic sewage to waste anaerobic digestion treatment of large livestock and poultry farms.

BIOMA began to enroll post graduate students in 2003, doctoral candidates of Environmental Science in 2010 and overseas students in 2011 and has already accumulative total to cultivate 72 post graduate students with 1 overseas student and 2 doctoralstudent. BIOMA has set up 5 majors at present, including Microbiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Facility Agriculture and Environmental Engineering, Agricultural Biological Environmental and Energy Engineering, Environmental Science and Environmental Engineering. BIOMA is mainly engaged in the research on basic and basic applied theory of anaerobic microorganisms, research on biogas fermentation technology and equipment, anaerobic digestion technology of high concentrated organic wastewater and after treatment of anaerobic-digested slurry, disperse anaerobic treatment of urban domestic sewage, desulfurization process of biogas and denitrification and dephosphorization process of wastewater, biogas production and engineering and technology research of combined cooling heating and power system, purification, research and development of related equipment, rural energy, ecological construction technology and research on corresponding policy and comprehensive utilization technology of biomass energy.
