Challenges

In Sri Lanka, small-scale farmers face significant challenges due to a lack of awareness and technical knowledge on sustainable farming practices. Key issues include limited water access, poor water quality monitoring, absence of real-time data systems, inefficient resource utilization, and minimal support in adapting to precision agriculture. Compounding this, widespread use of chemical fertilizers often contaminated with heavy metals threatens human (farmer’s) health and soil biodiversity. The root cause is a lack of knowledge and awareness regarding regenerative practices like Azolla and Vermicompost utilization, and limited access to precision agriculture tools. To address this, Elzian Agro implements integrated, data-driven precision agriculture solutions combined with live on-site demonstrations to raise awareness and build farmer capacity. This approach enhances yields, improves water efficiency, and supports a transition to safer, sustainable agriculture contributing directly to SDGs 2 (Zero Hunger), 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and 13 (Climate Action).

Toward a Solution

In response to the pressing challenges faced by smallholder farmers—particularly those cultivating on less than five acres, ELZIAN AGRO developed a holistic initiative designed to revolutionize sustainable agriculture through digital precision farming. The initiative addresses multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 15 (Life on Land), SDG14 (Life below Water) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

The primary objective is to enhance productivity, climate resilience, and sustainability by empowering marginalized farmers with affordable, technology-driven agricultural practices. This involves transitioning from synthetic fertilizers to regenerative solutions like Azolla-based biofertilizers and vermicompost, while promoting smart irrigation through IoT and AI-integrated systems Elzian-Agro-Eye and Elzian-Agro-Mate. By leveraging data for real-time decision-making and precision intervention, our solutions support Sri Lanka’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) on mitigation, adaptation, capacity building, and technology transfer.

Our methodology hinges on a user-centric, demonstration-driven model. After engaging with over 60,000 farmers, we identified that hands-on, live demonstrations are the most effective way to introduce precision agriculture to smallholder communities. Our demonstration site showcases integrated technologies that track real-time environmental, soil, and water parameters, enabling farmers to observe firsthand the value of data-driven farming. Systems like Elzian-Agro-Mate control up to 8 water zones per device, optimizing irrigation and cutting water waste. Farmers also engage with mobile and web-based decision-support systems that offer user-friendly interfaces designed for tech-savvy and non-tech users alike, including women and elderly farmers.

To address transnational development challenges, ELZIAN AGRO facilitates cross-border exchange through its collaboration with the International Analog Forestry Network (IAFN), enabling knowledge transfer on regenerative practices across Asia and Latin America. Our technology, developed in Sri Lanka and designed for tropical and sub-tropical climates, is adaptable to regions facing similar environmental constraints. The open demonstration model encourages replication in other countries through policy-level cooperation and community partnerships.

Innovation is at the core of ELZIAN AGRO’s competitive advantage. Our smart agriculture solutions outperform conventional systems by integrating simultaneous, high-precision measurement of NPK, pH, EC, and environmental parameters in a portable, solar-powered unit. Unlike competitors, our devices are built for on-the-ground use, energy-efficient, and scalable, featuring real-time zone control and modular design. The hardware-software synergy enhances productivity while reducing environmental impact—critical for nations seeking to modernize agriculture without escalating carbon footprints.

Our initiative has delivered measurable results: a 7%+ increase in crop yields, 15–20% reduction in irrigation costs, and up to 95% water-use efficiency. Replacing synthetic nitrogen with Azolla has substantially reduced nitrous oxide emissions a key climate mitigation outcome. Monitoring systems deliver real-time feedback, allowing farmers to apply only necessary resources, minimizing waste. All impacts are tracked using digital dashboards, environmental sensors, and surveys, enabling robust data collection for ongoing optimization.

Sustainability is embedded in our initiative through financial models, ecosystem integration, and policy alignment. Our project aligns with Sri Lanka’s push toward digital agriculture, food security, and eco-friendly farming practices. Partnerships with local authorities and international networks ensure continuity beyond pilot phases. The long-term viability is further strengthened by scalable revenue models, hardware durability, and ongoing farmer capacity development programs.

Replication is highly feasible in similar agroecological and socioeconomic contexts. The only prerequisites are basic digital infrastructure and stakeholder buy-in. Our solutions are modular and adaptable, enabling deployment in diverse geographies. Already, interest from other South Asian and African nations signals the model’s transferability. Public-private partnerships, inclusive training, and local adaptation are key conditions for successful replication.

Key lessons include the realization that sustainable adoption among marginalized farmers depends not only on technological access but also on intuitive, contextual education. Live demonstrations, peer learning, and ongoing support proved far more effective than static training. Gender-inclusive design and offline accessibility also emerged as essential features for equitable technology uptake.

ELZIAN AGRO’s initiative demonstrates how integrated, climate-smart, and regenerative agriculture powered by IoT, AI, and community engagement can transform smallholder farming. It not only meets environmental and economic challenges but also redefines global agricultural competitiveness through inclusive innovation.
