South Centre, JKN Room, Wednesday 16 May, 09:00 – 11:30
The meeting aims to provide a platform for developing countries Missions in Geneva to brainstorm on and discuss the opportunities and challenges on the role of SSC in the contexts of the 2030 Agenda in view of the forthcoming Second High-level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation. It will facilitate the exchange of experiences, concerns and ideas for greater engagement of Geneva-based delegations and UN agencies in support to the promotion of SSC and the identification of common areas of concern and expectations with regards to BAPA+40.
In Geneva, important discussions took place at UNCTAD, the traditional focal point for developing countries particularly on trade and development matters within the UN System. Another example is the latest ILO Governing Body in March 2018, which had among several decisions, the adoption of an outcome document, which calls for the reinforcement of the work of the ILO in the promotion of SSC (GB.332/POL/4). However, and despite the efforts, there is still scope for greater engagement of Geneva-based agencies in SSC. The South Centre sees BAPA+40 as a greater opportunity in this regard, to boost cooperation and coordination among developing countries and UN agencies in Geneva towards a more robust agenda on SSC.
