On July 13, 2018, the project document “Support to the Acceleration of Family Planning in Sao Tome and Principe” was signed by His Excellency Mr. Urbino Botelho, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation; Ms. Victoria D’Alva, Assistant Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA); and Ms. Zahira Virani, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Sao Tome.
This project is supported by the India-UN Development Partnership Fund and aims to significantly improve the availability and quality of family planning services and, strengthen managerial capacities at the central and district levels for better monitoring and implementation of the existing strategic plan to accelerate family planning.
The approved budget of US$550,000, for a period of two years, provided by the India-UN Development Partnership Fund, will contribute directly to the following activities in Sao Tome:
- Equip health centres with furniture and equipment to provide sexual and reproductive health, and family planning services;
- Support health units and NGOs with commodities and equipment to provide quality family planning services;
- Organize a yearly family planning week in partnership with other partners and reward one health unit per district per year, offering quality family planning services;
- Train service providers from public and private health facilities; and
- Support the data collection, reporting and documentation on family planning.
