The Government of India-funded project: “Reinforce the Resilience of the Vulnerable Populations in the Regions of the Kanem and Lake Chad” officially received the approval for implementation. The project document has been signed by the representatives of the Government of India and Chad’s Minister of Environment, Water and Fishing in N’Djamena on August 1.
This project is supported by the
India-UN development Partnership Fund and aims to address the development challenges of insufficient Water and Sanitation for Health (WASH) infrastructures, as well as improper solid waste and garbage disposal and inadequate hygiene practices that will prevent water-borne diseases in the regions of Kanem and Lake Chad. The project has three main areas of focus:
- Water Availability,
- Water Quality, and
- Sanitation and Health Services.
The total budget for this project is now US$600,000, after the Government of India approved an additional US$300,000 for increasing resources for improvements in water and sanitation practices in Kanem and Lake Chad. The activities outlined in the project document include building new latrines in eight villages, including in schools and health centres and new boreholes run by solar pumping systems in said villages.
Water management, hygiene and sanitation committees will be created as well as trainings conducted so as to support the committees in administrative and financial management, scheduling, operating and maintaining of photovoltaic systems.
Training courses will also be provided to professionals and local leaders on WASH and protection of the environment. This project also aims to conduct sensitization sessions on good WASH practices for the community to introduce clean, hygienic practices. Workshops on good practices and lessons learned will be conducted on a regular basis.

The Ministry of Energy, Water and Fishing is the National Implementing Partner of the activities supported by this initiative. UNDP Chad will provide the required technical assistance during the planning and implementation of activities. The United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) is the Fund Manager and Secretariat of the Board of Directors of the India-UN Development Partnership Fund; supporting and guiding through the overall project cycle.
The successful implementation of this project is expected to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, namely SDG 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well being for all at all ages, SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation, SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities and, SDF 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.
