Solidarity and South-South & Triangular Cooperation in Achieving Global Food Security
New York, 19 November 2020: A thematic good practices publication: “Good Practices in South-South and Triangular Cooperation in the Context of Food Security”, developed jointly by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) and the Brazil Africa Institute (IBRAF) was successfully launched at a virtual event on 19 November 2020. This publication presents over 40 good practices to crucial challenges faced by developing countries in the area of food security (SDG 2).
The good practices gathered in this thematic edition, which are also relevant to the unprecedented global health crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, aim to benefit developing countries seeking to scale up South-South and triangular cooperation initiatives, particularly in the widespread application of policies, strategies and programmes related to food security and agriculture. This aims to inspire governments, private sector and entrepreneurs, civil society and NGOS and citizens in general to learn, adopt and improve their practices on agriculture and food security.
The compilation spotlights the work of developing countries who are increasingly recognizing good practices in South-South and triangular cooperation as a viable pathway to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in addressing common and crucial challenges.
At the launch event of the publication, speakers from the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) and the Brazil Africa Institute (IBRAF) were joined by representatives from the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Food Programme (WFP), the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) and the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA) in sharing success stories and first-hand experiences on the good practices featured in this special thematic edition.
In his opening remarks, Prof. João Bosco Monte, President of IBRAF, called the event a milestone and stressed the “importance of cooperation and especially, solidarity towards food security”, urging continuing conversation and acknowledging the work of “food security champions”.
Successful cases embodying cooperation and solidarity towards achieving food security were shared by speakers at the event, who delved into challenges faced in their own unique contexts, the tangibles development outcomes delivered and achievements, and offered perspectives on replication and scaling-up of these good practices towards achieving food security.
Good practices for the publication were shared by distinguished speakers at the event included: ‘Brazil’s Development of Integrated and Sustainable Agroecological Production in Senegal (PAIS Project)’ by Brazilian Cooperation Agency’s General-Coordinator of Technical Cooperation, Mr. Nelci Caixeta; FAO-China South-South Cooperation Project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo by FAO’s Director, South-South and Triangular Cooperation Division, Mr. Anping Ye; Youth Technical Training Program on Post-Harvest Processing of Cassava by Dr. Alfredo Augusto Cunha Alves, Research Scientist and Supervisor of International Relations, EMBRAPA; Good practice: “Home Grown School Feeding Initiative” and “Smart School Meals“ by Dr. Christiani Buani, Head of Operations Management Unity, World Food Programme Regional Centre of Excellence Against Hunger and Malnutrition in Côte d’Ivoire; and Agricultural Research and Innovation Fellowship for Africa (ARIFA) by Dr. Abdulzarak Ibrahim, Capacity Development Officer, Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA).
In closing, UNOSSC Deputy Director, Xiaojun Grace Wang commended the innovative solutions shared and brought attention to the importance of food security (SDG 2) to the achievement of the SDGs, highlighting that: “Food security is not just about one SDG, it connects all of them.”
