Moi University

Description

About

In January 1981 a Presidential Working Party chaired by the distinguished Canadian academic, Dr. Colin B. Mackay, was convened to prepare detailed recommendations for a second university in Kenya. Later that year their report was presented to the then President, H. E. Hon. Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi. The report strongly recommended that the new university should have a distinct bias towards technology. In October 1983, a report titled “Project for the Second University” was prepared by a joint Kenyan and UNESCO team. As a result, in mid-1984 Moi University was established by the Government and building work on the site near Eldoret, commenced in the following year. The university Administration moved from its temporary offices in Eldoret to present main campus (Kesses), Uasin Gishu County on July 29, 1986.

The University currently has four campuses, namely: Main Campus, Town Campus, Eldoret West Campus and Odera Akang’o Campus. The Town campus hosts the College of Health Sciences (Medical Complex), School of Aerospace Sciences (Rivatex) and School of Law (Annex) while the Eldoret West Campus is home to our Privately Sponsored Students Programmes (PSSP). Moi University is proud to have two constituent colleges, namely Garissa and Rongo that also offer unique undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and a total of three Satellite Campuses in Nairobi, Kitale and Coast (Mombasa).

Vision

To be the University of choice in nurturing innovation and talent in science, technology and development.

Mission

To preserve, create, and disseminate knowledge, conserve and develop scientific, technological and cultural heritage through quality teaching and research; to create conducive work and learning environment; and to work with stakeholders for the betterment of society.

Philosophy

Putting knowledge to work is the University’s guiding philosophy. At Moi University, the discovery, dissemination, and application of knowledge are synergistically balanced. The University is driven by the process of involvement – involvement in world affairs; in the needs of individuals and their communities, businesses, industries, and governments; in the nurturing of inquisitive minds; in the transfer of ideas from the campus to the market- place; and involvement in societal problems in our country and beyond. The creation of new knowledge that will benefit society is at the heart of the University’s mission. The distinction between basic and applied research has become more blurred as the processes of discovery, scientific inquiry and scholarship inform all aspects of the educational enterprise at Moi University.

Core Values

  1. Promotion and defense of intellectual and academic freedom, scholarship and relentless search for truth.
  2. Fostering teamwork, innovation, networking, tolerance, and a culture of peace.
  3. Embracing excellence, transparency & accountability.
  4. Practicing professionalism, meritocracy, equality, integrity and social justice.
