About

Xiamen is a sub-provincial city in Fujian Province, a special economic zone, and an important central city, port and scenic tourist city on the southeast coast of China. The city is one of the first five special economic zones (SEZ) in China administrating 6 districts. South Fujian Dialect is the language which is predominantly spoken in Xiamen. It is said it was once egret inhabited place, so it is also called Egret Island.  

Economy 

In 2020, the preliminary estimation indicated that the gross regional product (GDP) in Xiamen had amounted to 638.402 billion yuan, a year-on-year rise of 5.7% at comparable prices. Specifically, the added value of the primary industry was 2.889 billion yuan, increasing by 2.5%; that of the secondary industry was 251.984 billion yuan, an increase of 6.1%; and that of the tertiary industry was 383.529 billion yuan, up by 5.5%.   

Foreign Trade 

The total value of Xiamen’s imports and exports in 2020 was 691.577 billion yuan, an increase of 7.8% over the previous year. Of which the total value of exports increased by 1.2% to 357.292 billion yuan and the value of imports increased by 16.0% to 334.285 billion yuan. 

The total value of imports and exports in general trade was 479.814 billion yuan, up by 13.1%, among which the value of the exports was 209.121 billion yuan, up by 1.2%; and that of imports was 270.693 billion yuan, up by 24.3% year on year.   

Environmental Protection 

In 2020, Xiamen ranked fourth as the city with best comprehensive air quality index (2.53) among 168 key cities in China, its excellent and good rate (99.7%) being in the third place. 

In the year of 2020, the city had a construction area of 397.84 square kilometers, including 150 parks covering an area of 3,794.40 hectares. The per capita green area of parks reached 14.60 square meters and the greenery coverage in the built-up urban area reached 18,295.66 hectares, with coverage rate up to 45.52%. Meanwhile, the city’s sewage centralized treatment rate was 100% and so was the pollution-free disposal rate of living garbage.   

Culture 

The Songwanchuan program jointly declared by China and Malaysia was successfully listed as one of the masterpieces of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO . 

The city has 247 protection units for immovable cultural relics (300 points in total), including 7 national key units of cultural relics protection (50 points), 54 provincial-level units (61 points), 95 city-level units (98 points), 91 county-level (district-level) units (91 points) and 89 Taiwan-related cultural relics and historic sites. Among 89 city-level or above representative intangible cultural heritage projects, 2 is listed by the UNESCO as oral and intangible heritages for humanity (Nanyin and Songwangchuan), 12 are national-level ones, 36 are provincial-level ones and 41 are municipal-level ones.
