Challenges
Student face several challenges related to career. These included feelings of confusion and uncertainty regarding their future path, which could potentially result in an unstable career, a Lack of Impact without proper career mapping and skill mapping activities. Students are also unaware of their personality and behavioral factors that are useful in choosing career paths with an understanding of their aptitude. Connecting with students and successfully implementing the career mapping program involved overcoming challenges such as Building Trust, ensuring effective Teacher Collaboration, and reaching out to the marginalized community. The process also involved helping students understand their weaknesses as part of the analysis.
Toward a Solution
The initiative aims to address student confusion and uncertainty by providing guidance, support, and resources, empowering communities with clear direction for their future to achieve SDG-8. A comprehensive approach, utilizing tests, analysis, technology, and counselling, has empowered students with guidance and clear direction, fostering confidence and improved decision-making in choosing career options for achieving SDG-4. The process was participatory, involving stakeholders such as career counsellors, parents, students, and technology supporters like the Google Educator Group (GEG-Satara). This initiative led to the systemic, cross-country transfer of knowledge with the “European Scientific Network on Career Guidance” (Career Lead-EU) and two of the GEGs of South Asian countries to replicate this good practice and knowledge among them for the mutual benefit of overcoming transnational development challenges.
The career mapping initiative achieved several positive outcomes:
The program aimed to address the Lack of Impact felt without proper career mapping initiatives. Outcomes included Increased Confidence among students, leading to Improved Decision-Making. The initiative also resulted in an Empowered Community, providing access to career guidance, support, resources, and information, as well as motivation and direction, thereby helping to alleviate student confusion and uncertainty.
Quantitative data highlighting the reach and scale of the initiative include:
- Number of sessions conducted – More than 100.
- Number of students joined – Around 800 in sessions.
- Number of responses: 768.
- Students approached – Approx 10,000 Students.
- Students benefited – Approx 3,500.
- Number of Schools approached – Around 40 (Including NGOs).
- Teacher Educators Trained – Approx 200.
- Six Webinars with subject experts were conducted.
- Interactive Sessions were held with 18 teacher educators who served as 07 virtual Counsellors.
- The initiative in Indian covered regions in Maharashtra across 7 Districts (Satara, Sangli, Pune, Solapur, Kolhapur, Nashik, Parbhani).
This practice is innovative, leveraging Google technology to provide a comprehensive, test-based career mapping approach that empowers students in marginal communities with direction. This practice offers a holistic approach to career mapping by analyzing personality factors, employability quotient, the economic capacity of parents, and their involvement in choosing a career option.
This model is replicated in the English language by empowering Career Counselors, providing e-resources, and developing an assessment tool known as the “7-Point Career Aptitude Test”. This program has proven sustainable for two decades through continuous improvement in career aptitude and behavioral parameters, aligning with the changing manpower scenario of Industrial Revolutions 4.0 and 5.0. The contextualization of the mapping process is one of the strengths of this program, which suits the needs of career aspirants across various regions. Use of innovative techniques like podcasts, edutainment, and multimedia content is an integral part of this movement.
