South-South in Action: From Cuba to the World launched by UNOSSC and the UN System

The United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) and the United Nations system in Cuba launched the most recent edition in the South-South in Action series on 7 May 2018 in Havana, Cuba. Titled “From Cuba to the World” (De Cuba para el Mundo), the report outlines the history of Cuba’s South-South development cooperation, presents concrete case studies of successful South-South exchanges, and details how these efforts contribute to wider global development efforts including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Launched during the 37^th Period of Sessions of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the report covers the full thematic scope of Cuba’s South-South work – from health to education, climate change and disaster reduction, and agriculture. “I am very proud to present this edition of South-South in Action, the first from Latin America and the Caribbean,” said Mr. Jorge Chediek, Envoy of the Secretary-General on South-South Cooperation and Director of UNOSSC during the launch. “The LAC region is very important in the history of South-South cooperation. The United Nations Conference on Technical Cooperation between Developing Countries was held in Buenos Aires in 1978. In 2000, Cuba hosted the first South Summit resulting in the Havana Programme of Action. And next year, the world will meet again in Buenos Aires for the Second High-level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation”. “Perhaps more importantly,” he continued, “the region is close to my heart. I grew up in Argentina and have spent many years of my professional life here, including as UNDP Deputy Resident Coordinator in Cuba”. South-South in Action is one of UNOSSC’s flagship series of reports. Launched in 2016, it is designed as a space for UNOSSC partners including Member States, UN entities, intergovernmental organizations, and civil society to present and share their South-South and triangular cooperation best practices. To date, 7 editions have been launched.
