Sustainable Development Goals and South-South and Triangular Cooperation – Challenges, gaps and questions in Latin American and Argentina

Article by Roxana Mazzola, Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) Delhi Conference on South-South and Triangular Cooperation 24th and 25th August 2017 RIS, New Delhi Abstract: This article analyzes the challenges, gaps and questions in Argentina and in the Latin American countries for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 and the contributions of South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSC and TC). It is structured in three parts: the first part refers to the context of the changing international and regional political cycle, the growing inequalities and the problems of growth. The second part situates the social panorama in Argentina and Latin America of the last 20 years. The third part emphasizes the importance of the contributions of SSC and TC in addressing the SDGs agenda in Latin America, Argentina and the countries of the South in two axes. On the one hand, supporting the analysis and sharing the lessons and responses of these countries to cyclical international economic crises that have very high social consequences and limit the achievement of SDGs. On the other hand, analyzing the SDGs agenda from the perspective of the gaps (investment, production and innovation, income and inequality, institutional, financial and fiscal, infrastructure and housing, health and education; gender and the environment gaps). Although it is not easy to influence on the modification of the problems of development and current inequality, it is from politics that it can be transformed by focusing on the orientation of the economic process with public policies. That is why the role of governments, SSC and TC are central.
