Background
The Report of the United Nations Secretary-General on the State of South-South Cooperation is presented annually to the 2nd Committee of the General Assembly.
Summary
The present report is submitted in response to General Assembly resolution 79/236, in which the Assembly requested the Secretary-General to submit to it at its eightieth session a comprehensive report on the state of South-South cooperation, including the implementation of the recommendations contained in the Buenos Aires outcome document of the second High-level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation. Attention is drawn to solidarity and collaboration among developing countries to accelerate progress on the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as to the support that many United Nations entities provided to Member States of the global South in 2024 to help them to deal with uncertainty and shocks; address climate change and the transition to a green economy; maximize the benefits of digital transformation; and tackle the challenges of debt distress and access to financing. The report concludes with a set of recommendations on how to strengthen the roles of South-South and triangular cooperation, in the context of a changing development environment, in the five years remaining in which to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
