Regional Work

South-South and triangular cooperation represent dynamic partnerships that transcend borders and foster collaboration among countries and regions of the Global South. These cooperative efforts occur at various levels – global, regional, subregional, and national – engaging diverse stakeholders and partners. The United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation plays a pivotal role in promoting, facilitating, and supporting these cooperative initiatives.

In the BAPA+40 Outcome Document, Member States request the United Nations Development System to enhance its support to South-South and triangular cooperation inter alia in the areas of promoting capacity-building, regional integration, interregional linkages. The Report of the 2nd High-level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation also recommends the strengthening of institutional mapping of South-South cooperation management at the regional and international levels. In Addition, Member States recognize the critical role of regional entities such as the United Nations Regional Commissions supporting South-South and triangular cooperation initiatives, in accordance with their respective mandates. The United Nations System-wide Strategy on South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Sustainable Development also calls for enhanced United Nations system-wide coordination on South-South cooperation at regional level. Member States at the 21st High-level Committee on South-South Cooperation also requested the UNDP Administrator to provide an update of the support to interregional initiatives, and progress made by UNDP and UNOSSC.

In responding to these calls, and in line with its Strategic Framework (2022-2025), UNOSSC developed a Regional Engagement Plan in close collaboration with regional institutions and partners both within and outside the UN System in all regions of the Global South. Specifically, the Regional Engagement Plan seeks to:

  • Amplify South-South and triangular cooperation to address regional and sub-regional development priorities through regional integration and regional level undertakings.
  • Identify partners and their priorities for review and support by UNOSSC, based on demand driven collaboration on South-South cooperation in the regions and ensuring a multistakeholder approach.
  • Enhance United Nations system-wide coordination on South-South and triangular cooperation at regional level, as called for in the United Nations System-wide Strategy on South-South and Triangular Cooperation.
  • Identify issues prioritized in the regions to enhance UNOSSC effectiveness in support of South-South cooperation at the regional and sub-regional level, informing, among others, the preparation of knowledge products and enabling targeted knowledge sharing through the UNOSSC knowledge sharing platform South-South Galaxy, alongside other relevant knowledge platforms developed and utilized by various United Nations entities and stakeholders.
