While countries across the globe struggle with the ever-increasing impacts of the climate crisis and related disasters, the challenges faced by Small Island Developing States are particularly daunting. They are on the front lines of sea-level rise, are regularly battered by perceptibly more severe storms, and their general isolation continues to exacerbate the economic fallout caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
So it’s not all that surprising that those with the most at stake are also those most willing to raise their voices to galvanize a global response to the climate crisis and to seek common solutions that will bolster their security while at the same time set an example for other countries.
In partnership with UNDP and with the financial support of the India-UN Development Partnership Fund, 11 Pacific Island States are walking the climate-mitigation talk and installing solar power in the homes of their Heads of State. In so doing, they are placing energy security and sustainable development at the top of their agenda. And their actions have not gone unnoticed or unappreciated.
